The Decorative and Applied Art of Turkmenia
The Decorative and Applied Art of Turkmenia / Декоративное-Прикладное Искусство Tуркменского Народа
in englischer und russischer Sprache
"The album is dedicated to the decorative and applied art of Turkmenia, now one of the USSR's Central Asian republics. It offers a survey of Turkmen arts and crafts from ancient times to the present day. Among the numerous art objects reproduced in this edition are also several extremely rare pieces made by craftsmen of antiquity and discovered on the territory of Turkmenia. Carpebmaking, being one of the oldest Turkmen crafts, has been given special attention. The jewellery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the national costume have also been treated in detail. The Turkmen carpets, with their elegant designs, brilliant colours and superb technique, have won a world-wide fame. The Turkmen silver ornaments, often gilt and inlaid with cornelian or coloured glass, have always been and still are an integral part of the national costume. These highly original items, remarkable for their noble simplicity of style, invariably produce an impression of solemn monumentality. The album also includes selected works by professional artists of Turkmenia, who continue the national tradition in the field of decorative and applied arts."
